THE LOTTERY

Inspired by horror author, Shirley Jackson’s famous short story, this series explores the nature of fate, human mortality, and essential meaning. Each piece depicts a single black dot on a piece of paper, but the distinct manner in which each piece of paper is folded reflects a different approach to life. Some approaches appear more innocent and youthful, others more serious and structured. These differences, though minor, invite the viewer to imagine the hands and minds that might have produced each piece of paper. However, regardless of one’s approach to the paper, the black dot signals that the fate of each is ultimately the same. All things come to an end, but the unique remnants of a life—the folds and markings; the wear and tear left behind—tell a story that endures.
